home improvement

Can I blog about my bathroom renovation even if I'm not done with it yet?

I guess it's my blog so I'll do what I want.

This past weekend, Dave and I renovated our half bathroom.  When we first took a tour of this house, we were very amused by the look of the downstairs bathroom.  It was purple with vinyl grass stickers on the wall.  There are so many weird parts to this look but here are a few that I wondered.

The weird part is the light purple.  It seems an unusual choice for a bathroom.  I'm not interior decorator (though I did barely pass that class in college) so maybe it really works sometimes.  If you have lavender walls in your bathroom, I'm sure they are beautiful.  Also, I would love to see a picture.

The weird part is the vinyl grass.  I'm wondering what the previous homeowners' overall vision was for this bathroom.  Were they going for a dewy meadow?  If so, why didn't they paint the walls blue for a sky?

The weird part is that it's just a tiny little piece of grass.  Why not a whole field?  Why just a patch?  I mean, I really want to know and I'll just never find out, I guess.

Also, someone tore out a giant hole in the wall behind the sink!

Regardless of the reason behind the tiny grassy patch in our very purple bathroom, we were ready for it to be gone.  It was funny at first.  But the comedy of the situation quickly wears off after you've moved in and realize you have to stare at a piece of grass while on the toilet.

The first thing we did was paint the walls green.  I found this shade in the "Oops" paint section at Walmart.  It was eleven dollars so I figured I didn't have much to lose.  (eleven dollars, to be exact, I guess) I liked it at first but the color started to wear on me.  It was just so green.

My mom suggested a faux finish and after doing some research on laying vinyl tiles, I added that to the list of updates for this bathroom.  So this last weekend we...

...took out the toilet and pedestal sink for ease of access...

...gave the ceiling and baseboards a fresh coat of paint...

...touched up the existing green paint...

...applied the copper glaze...

...and set the vinyl tiles in.

We are so close to being finished with the project.  The last thing we need to do is finish setting up the toilet and re-install the sink.  I was going to wait until all that was finished to show these pictures but we need parts from Home Depot and I feel like blogging now.

Once when we were first married, Dave made the comment that couples shouldn't play Monopoly together for the sake of their relationship.  About half way through our renovation process, I was just about ready to add "home improvement projects" to that statement.  We were grouchy.  But, when the room started to show signs of looking better than we started, it got kind of fun and rewarding.  Dave was especially good at trimming and laying the tiles in.

Our next home improvement project is to add an extra bedroom downstairs.

Just kidding.  LOL!  For now, we'll stick to painting and peel and stick vinyl tiles.
