I am a serious anglophile. I adore anything that has to do with England. Most people do not know this about me but those who do, know it well. I have spent countless hours just looking at a map of England, planning the trip that I will someday take. I took a sick day from work to watch the royal wedding live. I really love England.
I also love the Olympics. I remember fully being aware of the Olympics in 1994 when I watched the Winter Games in Lillehammer. My favorite sport to watch was figure skating and I was glued to the T.V.
Naturally, when I found out that this year's Olympic games would be set in London, I was especially excited. I have been counting down the days until tonight's opening ceremonies for months. I ordered my family to set aside a seven hour block to throw an England party for the Opening Ceremonies.
My mom and Katelyn and I went out that afternoon in search of classic British food to eat at our party. There are a few international aisles at the local grocery store and Great Britain had several shelves.
We had a lot of fun looking at the British imports. It is really strange to see foods that are similar to what we eat in America but just a little bit different. We really wanted to take this flag for our England party but decided that it would be stealing if we did. :(
We were not adventurous enough to try the Spotted Dick.
Baby Kate helped us carry our foods around the store. I think she was really jealous that we were making all of this British food and she could only drink milk for her dinner. How boring.
We made Yorkshire Pudding for our party appetizers. None of us had ever tried Yorkshire Puds (as the box called them) so we weren't sure if they turned out right. The popped up out of the muffin tins like popovers and had a kind of spongy texture like pancakes. Only my mom and I liked them.
I know that Fish and Chips are the cliche British food and to be totally honest, we bought frozen fish and frozen chips but they were really good.
My mom found crumpets in the grocery store a few weeks ago. I don't think she could have found a better British food for our party. We didn't really know what the British eat these with so we just put on butter and cinnamon and sugar. They were delicious.
